Ethnic Studies Student Association (ESSA)
The Ethnic Studies Student Association (ESSA) is a non-profit organization based at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Our central goal is to create an open dialogue about culture, identity, and socio-political issues that are explored in ethnic studies (ES) courses and in life. ESSA takes a critical stance against racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, and the systematic marginalization of people of color.
To accomplish our goals and to better connect with students and the community, we have chosen a variety of artists across all disciplines to function as our mouthpiece. In past years, ESSA has hosted concerts and events featuring politically conscious artists whose artwork and methods of expression center on identity formation, culture, and socio-political issues. We wish to provide a safe and supportive atmosphere where artists can showcase their own talent, find their own voice, and inspire others in the process.
